About:
Siblings Vanya and Sonia live a quiet life in the family farmhouse in Pennsylvania caring for their parents. Their peaceful routine is disrupted when their movie star sister Masha visits for the weekend with her young lover (Spike) and announces her plans to sell their childhood home. A weekend of rivalry, regret, and raucousness follows in this multi award-winning play.

Winner of both the Tony and Drama Desk Awards for Best Play in 2013.

Audition Process:

Prepare a 1-minute comedic monologues. Callbacks will be cold read from the script.

Child and Youth Safety Information:

Actors must be 18 years old by the first rehearsal.

Rehearsals:

First rehearsals will be Monday, July 27, 2026. Rehearsals will be Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays; weekday rehearsals are 6:30-9:30 PM and Saturday rehearsals are 10:00AM-1:00PM. All rehearsals are scheduled to be held at the Spotlight, but location is subject to change.

Tech week is Sunday, October 18, 2026 through Thursday, October 22, 2026, 6-10 PM. Shows are October 23, 2026 to November 8, 2026, Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30, and Sundays at 2:00 PM. All tech rehearsals and performances will be at The Spotlight.

No conflicts tech week or show dates.

Roles:

All roles are non-Equity; no pay, no fee. Arcadia Theater encourages diversity when casting shows and encourages all interested actors to audition.

The following are the characters as traditionally cast. We may, depending on numerous factors, cast differently than provided.

VANYA – 50s, living in Bucks County. Resigned to his life, more or less, at least compared to Sonia.
SONIA – His adopted sister, early 50s, living with him in Bucks County. Discontent, upset, regretful.
MASHA – His sister, 50s, glamorous and successful actress who goes gallivanting around the world.
SPIKE – An aspiring actor, 29 or younger, Masha’s new companion. Sexy, self-absorbed, but otherwise outgoing and friendly.
NINA – Lovely, sincere would-be actress, early 20s, visiting her aunt and uncle next door. Star struck, earnest and energetic.
CASSANDRA – Cleaning lady and soothsayer, any age, any race. In the original production, she was played by an African American actress in her 20s.
